Faithful readers of this column will recall that last school year was a particularly brutal one, minor-illness-wise, for the Butler family, complete with runny noses, hacking coughs and the not-so-occasional stomach flu. So as we come to the tail end of a perfectly healthy, happy, snot-free summer and head back to school — with all those germs! — Mom has decided to go on the offensive. My mission? To build up our immunity and prevent colds, viruses and infections…

For some, avoiding weight gain preferable to sex

For some women, weight control is more important than sex, according to a new poll of 1,001 people. About half of women say they would rather go without sex for the summer than gain 10 pounds. A fourth of men feel the same way. Most people say they would rather shed 10 to 20 pounds during the summer than get promoted at work. Of course, weight loss would make them feel sexier. About 66% of people say they need to lose weight to feel sexier than they currently do. It would take a loss of an average 23 pounds to feel hotter. “What this shows is that people are highly motivated to not gain weight,” says Bruce…

Things hit the “big crescendo” for Marci Williams in December 2005. Williams, 47, of Greensboro, N.C., had been obese for some time, weighing as much as 332 pounds at just 5-foot-3. That month she went to her family doctor for a routine physical. The physical changed her life. “That day, I left her office with a couple of medications for high blood pressure,” Williams said. “The following day, I got a call that I needed to go to her office to get a referral to a diabetes educator, who would teach …

Many birth defects preventable, experts say

There are few things more chilling to expectant parents than the possibility that their child might come into the world with a birth defect that threatens the child’s health or life. But there’s a lot that a woman can do before and during pregnancy to reduce the child’s risk for developing a birth defect, doctors say. Most of these precautions are common-sense measures that apply to anyone who wants to lead a healthy life. PREGNANCY: How to feed your baby right, even before birth IN THE WOMB: Mom’s choices affect child’s whole life “Women of reproductive age should be cognizant of the fact they need to be healthy,” said Dr. Michael Katz, senior vice president for research and global…

Fat and calorie bombs: Every state has worst-for-you foods

Most road food wouldn’t win any healthy-eating awards, but some regional fare is so fattening it could take your diet on a complete detour. The editors of health.com researched regional high-calorie, high-fat foods and named one high-calorie nutrition bombshell from each state. The staff searched for information from regional food bloggers and restaurants and got contributions from Twitter and Facebook followers. “We did a lot of research, but we didn’t set strict guidelines on how many fat grams or calories a food had to have” to make the list of fattiest foods, says the website’s editor in chief, Amy O’Connor. The winners in each state were based on “the grossness factor and shocking combinations,” she…

Parting ways with "fake" food

Packaged guacamole makes the cut. Pop Tarts, alas, do not. The difference? The first is “real” food, the second not so much. That’s according to Bruce Weinstein and Mark Scarbrough, whose new book, “Real Food Has Curves: How to Get Off Processed Food, Lose Weight, and Love What You Eat” (Gallery), is a guide to what should be a natural, intuitive activity: feeding ourselves. Connecticut couple Weinstein (a trained chef) and Scarbrough (a former English professor) have written 17 cookbooks together over 11 years and write for Weight Watchers, Cooking Light and, on occasion, The Washington Post. (Weinstein is also known for his book and blog about knitting for men.) In “Real Food,” they walk us through a seven-step process of weaning ourselves from…

Yogis welcome vegetarians and omnivores

Does embracing yoga mean saying goodbye to cheeseburgers? This Story Animals or omnivores? Yogis apply live-and-let-live to both. The Checkup: Take up yoga, give up meat? One of the persistent debates in the yoga community is whether yogis should be vegetarian. One side finds evidence in ancient texts that eschewing meat is among the central precepts of yogic tradition. Others find in yoga’s teachings a more inclusive bent, a belief that yoga is for everyone, no matter what they choose to eat. Data seem to support the latter stance. A 2008 “Yoga in America” survey conducted for Yoga Journal magazine found that almost 16 million people in this country practice…

JACKSON, Miss. — When the Jackson Police Department tried to recruit new officers this spring, more than a third of the applicants were not able to pass the initial physical fitness test. The city’s police academy’s initial fitness exam includes push-ups, a 1½ mile run, an obstacle course and a flexibility test, Deputy Police Chief Gerald Jones said. Mississippi has the highest rate of obesity in the nation, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But Jones said it is not just that recruits are fat. “What we are finding is a decline in overall physical strength,” he said. “They can’t complete the mile-and-a-half run.” Overweight and out of shape recruits for police, fire and emergency …
