CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley, who has presided over the third-largest U.S. city for 21 years, like his father did before him, announced Tuesday that he will not run for a seventh term, saying the time “just feels right.” Daley, 68, said he’d been thinking about not running for several months and became comfortable with his decision over the last several weeks. “It just feels right,” Daley said at a news conference, his smiling wife Maggie standing by his side. “I’ve always believed that every person, especially public …

BUFFALO, New York — John Lennon’s killer was again denied parole in New York, nearly 30 years after gunning down the ex-Beatle outside the musician’s New York City apartment building. A parole board decided not to release Mark David Chapman after interviewing him Tuesday at Attica Correctional Facility in upstate New York. It was Chapman’s sixth appearance before the board since becoming eligible for parole in 2000. He will be eligible again in 2012. Chapman, 55, had been scheduled to appear last month, but the hearing was postponed by parole officials, who said at the time they were awaiting additional information. They did not elaborate. Among those who have opposed his release is Lennon’s now 77-year-old widow, Yoko Ono, who said last …

PHILADELPHIA — Duong Nghe Ly can’t wait to begin his senior year at South Philadelphia High School. A day of violence there last year changed his life, and he wants to learn if his school has been transformed as well. Last Dec. 3, after years of attacks on Asian immigrant students, something finally snapped. Fueled by rumors, a group of students roamed the halls searching for Asian victims until one was attacked in a classroom. Later, about 70 students stormed the cafeteria, where several Asians were beaten. About 35 students pushed past a police officer onto the so-called “Asian floor,” but were turned back. After school, Asians being escorted home were attacked…

It’s unclear if the slump will continue the rest of the year. The Lafayette metro area, which includes Purdue University in West Lafayette, has a positive sign. Many people who…

In the summer of 1873, in a New York City hotel room, a teenaged boy pulls out a pistol, fires four shots and his father falls dead. Frank Walworth’s motives, his sensational murder trial and the impact the murder had on his family is wonderfully detailed in Geoffrey O’Brien’s neo-gothic true crime story, The Fall of the House of Walworth . Walworth, who turned himself in after shooting Mansfield Walworth, a writer of mediocre novels, never imagined the firestorm of publicity his act would ignite. But the Walworths were an upper-crust family from Saratoga Springs, …

Yankee magazine has been celebrating New England for three-quarters of a century, but even after all these years, there’s still room for surprise. In its 75th anniversary issue, on newsstands in August, the magazine named Kent, Conn., population 3,000, the best town in New England for fall foliage.
